Self-care has become a buzzword, often associated with expensive spa days or elaborate rituals. But as a nurse who has experienced burnout firsthand, I've learned that real self-care is simpler—and more essential—than social media makes it seem.
What Self-Care Actually Is
Self-care is any intentional action you take to support your physical, mental, or emotional health. It's not selfish—it's necessary. You can't pour from an empty cup, and taking care of yourself enables you to show up better for everyone else in your life.
Why Most Self-Care Routines Fail
People often start with ambitious plans that aren't sustainable:
- • Too time-consuming for real life
- • Too expensive to maintain
- • Based on what works for others, not you
- • Treated as optional rather than essential
- • All-or-nothing thinking (if I can't do it perfectly, why bother?)
Building a Sustainable Routine
1. Start with Non-Negotiables
Identify 2-3 basic self-care practices that you'll protect no matter what. These might be: 7 hours of sleep, a 10-minute morning walk, or eating lunch away from your desk. Keep it simple.
2. Attach to Existing Habits
Link new self-care practices to habits you already have. Deep breathing while your coffee brews. Stretching while watching TV. Gratitude journaling right after brushing your teeth.
3. Make It Easy
Remove barriers. Keep your yoga mat out. Put your vitamins next to your coffee maker. Have healthy snacks prepped and visible. The easier something is, the more likely you'll do it.
4. Schedule It
Put self-care in your calendar like any other appointment. If it's not scheduled, it often doesn't happen. Even 15 minutes blocked for "me time" counts.
5. Be Flexible
Life happens. If you miss your morning meditation, do 5 minutes at lunch. If you can't make it to the gym, take a walk. Something is always better than nothing.
